Sadio Mane was put through on goal but his shot could only find the post. England defender Stones rushed to clear the ball but ended up smashing it at an on-rushing Ederson.
With the ball bouncing perilously goalbound, Stones was forced to run at goal and make a desperate goal-line clearance.
The 24-year-old's effort somehow evaded Mohamed Salah and spared City what would have been a disastrous own goal.
Goal line technology later showed that a minor portion of the ball had not crossed Ederson's line - 1.12cm to be exact.
It was this footage that Stones viewed at full-time.
Alongside Ederson, the centre-back watched back his clearance and saw just how close the pair came to scoring an own goal.
After viewing the footage, Stones bore a relieved grin and shouted "Hadouken" - a phrase from when a special attack is performed in the video game Street Fighter.
When asked about the clearance, he told Sky Sports: "I tried to just take everything, to be honest. I'm glad I reacted quite quickly, and I've heard it's quite tight.
"I'm happy it just didn't go over the line, to be honest. I tried to take Ederson and the ball, but it deflected off him. I just had to react quickly, and I think those sorts of things can change games."
