So day started out with me forgetting like 100% how to ride a dirt bike.

Shut up you. Anyways so I was sucking then after an hour or two I started getting a lot more confidence just in time for my old body (31 today, its my birthday) to get all wore out. This was the first time doing some real trail riding since my ACL surgery and it was hard. Hope you like!

So what is a supermoto, or supermotard? It all started as a type of motorcycle racing that combined street and dirt racing on one track. There can be some debate, but essentially, it's a dirtbike or enduro with 17 inch rims. You have factory built ones, like the DRZ400SM, or you can build your own. The basic recipe: swap the 21" front and 18 or 19" rear wheels for a pair of wider, 17" rims. This allows them to run sportbike tires, or even newer supermoto specific tires. Still, these tires are normally designed more for the street than dirt.
So how do 17 inch rims make a dirt bike do all that? Well, remember in physics class when the teacher spun that bicycle wheel up while you held on by the axle, sitting in a office chair? Turn the wheel to the left and the chair would start spinning to the left and same with the right. What caused that was the gyroscopic effect and the taller and heavier that wheel, the more this effect is present. You could also imagine a spinning top. Small light ones spin for much less time than big heavy ones. That's the same thing happening with 17" wheels vs 21-18" wheels. The taller dirt wheels are great at keeping the motorcycle stable which is useful in the dirt or sand. But on the pavement the lighter 17" wheels take less effort to switch direction. You trade stability for nimbleness. The supermoto will be able to dive into turns much easier.
So let's take these supermotos out to the twisty back roads. Not the long sweepers, that's sportbike country. To the tight hairpins and switchbacks. The suggested 10 and 20 mph roads with squiggly arrow signs. Remember all that geometry and gyroscopic talk? "Yeah, science!" Well, that's about to come into play. With supermotos you sit more on top of the bike than on a sportbike. The bars give you tons of leverage to throw the bike back and forth, which is hardly needed in the first place, given the drastic weight difference compared to a sportbike.
If you convert an MX bike that's whole another story. Frequent oil changes and valve adjustment will have to be performed and the engine will need rebuilding sooner. They don't come with lights or the electrical systems to run them so you'll have to buy a starter and wiring harness kit to convert it. Then, if you're lucky enough to live in the right place, you'll be able to register it for the streets. For all that effort you'll have a light, high powered machine. No doubt it will be the fastest motard at the meet; just hope the ride isn't too long, because if someone breaks down, it's most likely you. Somewhere in the middle you'll find bikes like the WR450F or CRF450X. Detuned MX bikes for trail riding. This can be a good compromise of both. Lighter and more powerful than the factory supermotard but not as much as the MX ones. You'll still have to change the oil often, but the motor won't need to be overhauled for a long time (if ever). Ultimately, you'll have to do research on what's going to best for you.
The supermoto is one of the most versatile motorcycles you could ever own. It destroys twisties, goes off roading, makes you feel like a stunt rider, and flies through traffic. It does all this for less money than most street bikes. Their loud, thumper engines alert everyone in a half mile radius that a hooligan is near. Not only one of the most fun times you'll ever have on a motorcycle, but it's truly a bike that helps you understand the basics of riding. So unintimidating, you'll have no problem pushing the limits and picking up skills you never would have on a high powered sport bike. These bikes are so spectacular, that the best way to understand it is to ride one. Throw your leg over a supermoto and I guarantee you'll have a stupid grin when you get off.
