Australia's competition watchdog is urging action by social media companies to protect user's privacy.

"Make no mistake, these companies are among the most powerful and valuable in the world" - Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. "They need to be held to account and their activities need to be more transparent."

"We're very concerned that current privacy policies offer consumers the illusion of control but instead are almost legal waivers that give digital platforms broad discretion about how they can use consumers' data" - ACCC chairman Rod Sims.
